Here, I will be posting landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and other paintings that are not necessarily geared towards the children's book market. Valley Forge part 2, and some more lemons

Here is a tiny oil painting based on the same composition as the larger one. This one is only 8x10 in. This last lemon painting completes my tiny trilogy of lemon paintings. Both paintings are now on sale at Hob Nob Home in Wayne, PA.

Here are some paintings I've finally been able to photograph. Both paintings are oil on 1.5" thick canvas. I have another lemon painting that is currently drying (and is sure taking its time doing so!).

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

The Pied Piper of Hamelin is an interesting story. The town of Hamelin is infested with rats, and the townspeople promise gold to anyone who can help them with the infestation. A stranger shows up, and uses his pipe to lure the rats out of town and into a nearby river. The townspeople balk on their offer, and refuse to pay the stranger. The stranger then returns, and uses his pipe to lure the children out of the town. He lures them to a nearby cave, and the children and the stranger are never seen again.

Now, there have been many interpretations of the story. An old Disney cartoon portrays the piper as a hero of sorts, freeing the innocent children from the clutches of their greedy, selfish parents. In another version, the piper returns the children after the townspeople pay him the gold he was originally promised. I like to think though, that in most versions of the story, up until the moment he gets screwed, he's just a wanderer trying to make a quick buck. It's really interesting to see how the story has changed so much over the years. I find that the first half of the story tends to remain pretty similar throughout its many reincarnations.

SCBWI Fall Philly Conference 2009

Here are some pics I forgot to post when I was at this year's SCBWI Fall Philly conference. We had some great speakers, including Mr. Dave Weisner, who gave some great insight to the world of children's books. Looking forward to the Pocono Mountain Retreat in April!

Take a Walk on the Wondrous Side

Hey everyone. This latest picture a submission for an upcoming SCBWI retreat - the 2010 Pocono Mountain Retreat in April (I had a great time last year). The proposed theme was "Take a Walk on the Wondrous Side." This got me thinking about what books can really allow kids to do. I feel like books can take kids (or adults for that matter) to places they can't possibly go to. It lets them swim deep under the sea, or take a walk on a distant planet. By reading, kids can 'take a walk on the wondrous side,' by traveling to places where they can dream, wonder, and ask big questions. Let's hope it works out!
